I do take vitamins for hair and nails and the color doesn't change. I don't thinks it's a fungus and it's not the nail polish cause I don't wear nail polish as often and when I do I wear light colors. What should I do?

There are several things that can turn your nails yellow.

Age, smoking, and your polish, for example.

Remember to ALWAYS use a good base coat of at least a CLEAR polish before applying color to your nails. Any bold colors will stain the nails especially reds and burgundy's.

Try Efferdent tablets (or another brand of denture whitening soak). Make your manicure bowl as warm as you want it, drop a tablet in and let your nails soak until it stops fizzing and starts turning clear again. Do this for both hands. Then take a nail brush and soap and scrub them really well over the tops and the undersides.

Yellow nails usually come from the pigments in nail polish, even light colors. Always use a clear base coat before applying polish.

Do you smoke? Smoking can cause your nails to turn yellow.

There are many medical reasons a person's nails turn yellow but I don't think that is your problem.

TO GET RID OF THE YELLOW: (home remedies)

Soak your nails in 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide mixed with 2 1/2 tablespoons of baking soda. (It will be a pastelike consistency) Use a Q Tip to put some of the mixture under the tip of each nail and on the top of the nail. Let it sit about 3 minutes then rinse off with warm water.

You can also pour 3 capfuls of hydrogen peroxide into 1/3 cup of water and soak your nails for a couple of minutes.

Denture tablets will whiten yellow nails - simply follow the pkg directions for dissoving the tablet and soak nails.

Real Lemon Juice whitens yellow nails too. Use a fresh lemon, squeezing the juice into a small bowl and soak nails. Make sure you use lotion afterwards though.

VERY LIGHT buffing will remove yellow from nails. If done properly it actually also promotes nail growth by increasing circulation. Use a top quality buffer and only buff in one direction VERY LIGHTLY. If you buff too hard or too much you will damage and weaken your nails.

Repeat whichever procedure you use until the results meet your satisfaction.

Pigmentation of the nail color in the polish is NOT the sole reason for yellowing of the nails. It is caused partially by the formaldehyde in virtually ALL polish, even clear base coats.

If you want shiny nails without polish AND want to remove the yellow, there are some very inexpensive nail files that buff your nails to a very high sheen. They are about $2-$4 and the resulting finish literally looks like you have polish on them. It works like a regular nail file but the grit is extremely fine. It's sort of like those polished rocks. Using this buffer will remove a very, very, thin layer of your nail and the related yellowed part and buff your nails resulting in a shiny surface.

You can distinguish these files from others because it will generall have 3 to 4 different grades on it, going from fine, to very fine, to extremely fine, to something that has the texture of leather. They may look like traditional files with 2 different grades on each side, or it may be a rectangular block with a different grade on each side.

These are similar to the ones that they sell at the mall kiosks--the ones where someone is yelling out "Can I see your nails?" in order to get you over there and listen their sales pitch. Don't buy them there. They are $20 and a rip off.

Walmart has a nail whitening kit you can buy and I love it (over by the nail polish and stick on nail decorations). My nails are a little yellow also (mostly if you look at them from underneath) and I hate it. So, this kit is like a gel you put on under your nail and then you wash it off with a scrubby and then it has a whitening pencil you use under your nail and a clear polish. It only takes about 10 minutes to do and when you are done, your nails are SUPER white and look really neat and cared for.

Try going awhile without putting anything on your nails. A few weeks. If you don't notice anything, it may really be a fungus. That's nothing to freak over. Just get it checked out though

you can get nail soaks which contain a tad whitening products in them. I've got a whole packet but I'm yet to find 5 minutes to use mine. other than that the only other self-diagnosis I can think of is Calcium intake - is it low? going to the dr's to check it out might be an idea also - it could be an indication of something?

soak your fingernails in lemon juice then use a good conditioning / skin brightining lotion for hands...co bigelow makes a great lemon scented one its the best.
regularly buffing your nails will help prevent this as well. I use a 4 way file it works great.

I had a friend who had a similar situation and it turned out to be jaundice. You should get a doctor to check it out if it has persisted for more than three weeks.
