I really would like to know how many times each of the 37 presidents who have had U.S. postage stamps have appeared on stamps. I know that George Washington has been on more stamps than any other American, but have not been able to locate specific numbers for each of the presidents.

That really depends on how you count! Washington has appeared on hundreds of different U.S. stamps, but exactly how many depends on how many "face similar" varieties you count. There are many stamps from the "Washington-Franklin" series of 1908-1921 that differ by only tiny changes in perforation gauge, watermark, paper type, or "flyspeck" design differences.

In the Scott Specialized Catalogue of U.S. Stamps & Covers, which you may be able to find at a public library, there is a listing of stamps by subject. It is in the preliminary section (page 72A in the 2003 catalogue I have in front of me). Look in the Table of Contents under "subject index..." to find the exact page. Each president is listed there, along with all other stamp subjects.
