Magnesium is used as a laxative, however you want to use magnesium hydroxide in either 300mg or 600mg tablets. The dosing schedule would be 2400mg (eight 300mg tabs) to 4800mg (eight 600mg tabs) once daily as a single dose and followed by 8 oz. of water. If you'd prefer, you can divide the dosage equally into 2 - 3 smaller ones taken 2 - 3 times in one day and followed by 8 oz. of water.
Or you could make your life simple and just buy a bottle of Milk of Magnesia.

I'd step up your fiber and water intake. That's more effective than anything else.
Recent studies have shown that magnesium taken with calcium can decrease the absorption of calcium, so be sure to take them seperately.

My doctor says 1000 mg . is safe but if you haven't taken it before try a lower dose. like 400. I take 800mg a day but I started lower, you never know how your body will react to new supplements. Good Luck and hope you get going!!

Try taking a lower dose first cause 1000 mg can already cause diarrhea or hypermagnesemia to some people.
