It helps to 'seed' the tank with beneficial bacteria from an established tank. Transfer some filter media, gravel (in a mesh bag), or decorations from the established tank to the new tank, and you cut the cycle time in half.

You can also put a few feeder fish, rosy reds or guppies, in the new tank for a week or so to help build it up. Depends on how long you are willing to wait and what your plans are.

You need bacteria which also need fish waste so i would put a cheap goldfish in and some liquid bacteria and leave for a couple of days.
