That's a good question! My given first name was so awful, I just never asked my parents why and how they picked such a crappy name. I mean, no explanation they could have given me would ever justify such an ugly name.
When I was five years old, I simply advised everyone to address me by the new first name I had chosen - even my parents. When I turned 18, I had my first name legally changed to the name I chose when I was five.
It didn't really upset my parents. I just overheard them talking about it one day. They were like, "...well, she's a SPUNKY little thing, isn't she?" LOL!

Yes, they wanted a boy and had picked a name for one, of course when I was born instead panic set in as no name had been chosen, so my grandma who was Italian and in awe of some famous American at the time chose the name of this Americans wife as my name, I so loved my grandma but I hate my name and wish she had never been in awe of this bloody American she thought was the bees knees because I have had to live with this name all my life and I still hate it even now.

Yes. My mother had originally picked out the name Amanda. When I was born the nurse asked what my name is going to be and she said Stephannie. She was young when I was born so she was too embarrassed to say she said the wrong name. So she kept the name. She didn't even know how to spell it so she spelled it with two n's which is not how it is normally spelt.

Dad was a teacher and he was aware that a bad choice of name means you will be mocked at school. So he chose the name Neil on the basis that it couldn't be shortened and didn't give me a mock-able set of initials, his were PAD, and he got called PADdy at school.

Yes. My Dad was reading the works of a certain author at the time I was born, and this author had a son just before I came along, and my Dad named me after him.

no, but as i got older i just more and more used to it. it would've been simpler and easier if they had gave me a western forename; likewise, i wouldn't be keep having to pronounce my name to people, just so they can pronounce it correctly and kids at school used to take the piss out of me because of it and call me bad names. but its okay and its different, which must be a good thing. i have no idea what Waiching means though; my parents still haven't told me to this day

No, I don't, but I do know that my Gran wanted me to be named after her.
She was called Elizabeth.
My maiden name is Taylor.
So I would have been Elizabeth Taylor. What a name to have had to have lived up to!!
Phew, thank goodness they didn't listen to Gran!

Yes. My sister loved that name and asked them if they could name me that and since they thought it was a nice name they decided to go for it.
I also know what they ALMOST named me, there was another name they had in mind all along, but they changed their minds when my sister begged them.
