not all school doors are. I live in a city full of crime, our public schools from middle school on up are behind fences and gates with camera systems and police officers on campus at all times.

It could be that the air conditioning has been turned off, since it's October. I don't know what part of the country you live in.

Are you mentioning this in reference to the recent school tragedies? We have lived in a more trusting society, where taboos against violence on women and children were not broken so very often. Or the garment of our society is becoming fast frayed, I'm afraid.

most schools (at least in NYC) dont have air-conditioning. You have to let air circulate.
Most school that have many exits have doors that are locked from the outside. it is possible for someone inside to let in an outsider.
No school can lock students inside.

THIS IS A GOOD QUESTION. I HAVE A HUSBAND WHO WORKS AT A PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL AND THEY ARE REQUIRED TO KEEP THEIR DOORS CLOSED DURING CLASS AND THE WINDOWS COVERED AT ALL TIMES. BUT I CAN WALK THROUGH ANY OUTSIDE DOOR AND GO TO HIS CLASS AND NEVER SEE ANYONE. THIS HAS ME GREATLY CONCERNED.

Because students aren't prisoners and schools aren't prisons. Just because there are a few nutbags out there doesn't mean the rest of us need to live like we've done anything wrong.
