1. They have just been rejected from the womb. This is their first sense of rejection.
2. The air feels so much colder than in the womb.
3. They have to suck in air into their lungs. They were collapsed in the womb, and they have to force them open.
4. They are learning to breathe for the first time ever.
Conclusion: The birth process is not just hard on the mom, but on the baby too. Get used to it little buddy. That's life on this planet.

Several reasons:
The real world is Cold, The baby is used to the 98 degrees inside Mommy.
It's very bright outside of Mommy, usually pretty dark inside.
No longer nice and cuddly inside Mommy, now stretched out and upside down getting thrown all over the place and getting probed and checked out. Probably pretty scary.
If baby is not crying, usually means it's not breathing yet. This is the reason for the first spank on the hiney. The main reason for the crying is to make the lungs work for the very first time. Also helps expel any fluid or mucus the baby might have in the mouth and throat. All of this is a good sign and totally normal.
If the baby does not cry automatically, the nurses and Doctor there can usually handle it and the baby will be fine.

Sounds like everyone gave you some great answers so I won't repeat everything, I would like to mention however, that my son did not cry when he was born and he was perfectly fine. I was very scared at first because everyone tells you that if they aren't crying something is very wrong. Well, that is not always the case. My doctor said, sometimes they just don't cry. I think he was shocked more than anything and by the time they were finished poking and proding w/all the typical newborn procedures, he was safe and warm and suckling milk. They wanted to make sure his lungs were ok so they did some standard tests and sure enough, he was just fine. The funny thing is, my son is now almost 2 and when something startles him, he makes a sad face and pokes out his bottom lip and doesn't always cry. In fact most of the time he doesn't. This is not to say that he doesn't cry, just that when he is shocked, crying is not his choice of reactions.

The baby was warm and comfortable and safe and then BAM! Bright lights, noises he has only heard as muffled murmurs are now LOUD and CLOSE, he isn't wrapped in a warm surrounding like he was before. Some strange person is touching him, "WHERE IS MY MOM!?!"
It can all be very overwhelming. Just because a baby doesn't cry when it is born doesn't mean that the baby isn't ok. My baby didn't cry. She was very calm. She only cried when they put her on the scale to weigh her because it was so cold. She scored a 10/10 on the APGAR which is very rare. :)

That first breath is the very most important. When the baby cries the chambers within the heart that were open then close. This is vital to his living. Making them cry thru the light tapping on his bottom will force him to take that first breath and the umbilical chord can be cut.

think about it...nine months in the comfort of enclosed space, warmth, good tasting fluid, no need to breathe, no need to shiver, nice and dark in there, the hum of mothers voice, the music of her heart beating and her intestines singing.......then the stress of being pushed through a hole, head squeezed, neck bent, your precious womb is squeezing together (contractions) and forcing you out. Just when you are completely stressed out and annoyed, your eyes are shocked by this bright light, someone sucks that yummy fluid out of your mouth, and you are freezing cold! You are no longer in nice warm fluid and the air is so cold and dry! That would make anyone cry....no pain, no memory, no worry. Once that baby gets her lips wrapped around mommies warm nipple and gets a taste of that sweet warm milk and can hear the farmiliar sound of the heartbeat and feels the touch of mommy for the first time, she will forget everything in the past and fall fast asleep wrapped up tightly in her mommies arms.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with the baby thinking the world is an evil place or somthing. The sudden coldness and shock of a different place would make anyone cry. Baby or not.

Well babies actually cry in the womb also.. as they are getting closer to delivery. But the most common sense reason would be that they were very cuddled in the womb and you ripped them out a whole new environment.. Why don't you ask yourself the same question you were a baby once right?

He is not crying actually, he is starting to breath air, as when he is womb, he is breathing through his umbilical cord (Membranous duct connecting the foetus with the placenta) as soon he/she come out of the womb the body starts to breath air. Do you one thing there won't be any tears from a baby whose is just born. If the baby is not crying and then something is very very bad.

these are very interesting answers! i agree with the people above me...it's a new place that the baby is not used to. it's like a whole complete different world for the baby. they cant talk yet to express how they feel so they begin to cry. they need to learn how to breathe and most likely it hurts the first time.
