Frank Sinatra was interested and the studio's original choice was Ernest Borgnine or Lawrence Olivier. Coppola wanted either Olivier or Marlon Brando. However, Olivier was ill and not working so they went with Brando. I thought he was great.

Laurence Olivier was wanted by Paramount to play Vito Corleone, but he was unable to sign on due to health problems.
Coppola eventually chose Brando over Ernest Borgnine.
NO WAY !
Brando's role is a CLASSIC, right up there w/ Clark Gable as Rhett Butler and Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch.
(Al Pacino played MICHAEL Corleone - De Niro also auditioned for THAT role - remember this was over 30 years ago!)
