I know Christians have made up all sorts of stories that are not backed by historical evidence in order to wave the problem away. "Jubilee year" was once every 49 years; not exactly a great way to get free. Chances were good that a slave would die before that opportunity came around again. Slaves were bought, sold, owned for life, and any children born to the slave were owned by the master. That's not indentured servitude, no matter how you try to whitewash it. That same "it would be cruel to release the slaves because they couldn't earn a living" was used to defend keeping black slaves in the south, too. The bigotry and prejudice that kept blacks from making a living, forcing them to remain slaves, is nothing to be proud of. The southern slave owners had loads and loads of excuses for why they were doing their slaves a huge favor by enslaving them. Sounds like Christian apologists are doing the same thing. A female slave who must marry someone in the household in order to gain any privileges was not free. She was able to exchange sex for a certain degree of freedom, but she was not free to make her own choices. Slave owners were allowed to beat their slaves nearly to death. The rule was that the beating couldn't be so severe that the slave died immediately, but if he died several days later that was just fine. How can any supposedly moral person justify that? Owning another human being is wrong. Period. I don't care what your book of bad morals says.
