Help Me With My Wireless Internet PLEASE!!!!?

Question

Hello all. I live in a studio style apartment outside of my mother-in-law's house with my girlfriend. The apartment is in the back of a tool shop. When I am in their house my internet speed is up to 56 Mbps, however, when I am outside in our apartment, the speed drops dramatically to 2 sometimes 5 Mbps. We have wireless DSL and we do not have a wireless router hooked up, it is a wireless modem. However, I do have a brand new wireless ROUTER that I can hook up if that will somehow make the signal better. I don't really have the money to spend on any type of repeaters, signal boosters, etc. and the homemade antennas seem too complicated for me. Could someone break down how I could increase my speed up even just a little bit to be able to surf faster. Other details: Shop is apprx. 30 yards from house, tin roof. Since you have DSL, I believe your wireless modem is actually a modem and a single port router combine. Even though the box may have modem printed on it, it should be a modem and router together.

Now, back to your problem. Because of the distance of the wireless router/modem to your location, you signal will always be weak at the shop. You will probably need approval from the homeowner to let you run the wiring.

There are several ways to solve this problem.

1) Relocate the DSL wireless modem/router closer to you or use your other wireless router as a wireless access point (AP) to bring it closer to the corner of the house that's closest to you.
Also get a signal booster antenna for the your wireless AP.

2) Run a RJ45 cable from the modem/router to your apartment. You will need approval from the homeowner to do so since drilling holes in the wall maybe involved. You will also need to configure your router to a wireless access point (AP).

3) Get your own DSL service or broadband (through cable) in the apartment. This is probably out of the question otherwise you will have your own place.

If you have DSL, I don't think you have 56 Mbps, because the connection they offer is about 1.5 Mbps. Or you meant 56 Kbps.

If you have the router, try installing the router, it will have more strength in the signal and you will have a faster connection...

Metal usually blocks radio waves. I think the tin roof is the culprit. I'll be watching this question for other answers, I am curious myself.

You can try the newer 802.11N router, which is gives the most range.

you conncet the ethernet cable to the back of the router on the port that is marked ethernet then you take the other end of the cable to the ethernet card on on the back of your pc you conncet it to the port marked ethernet

then you conncet the other cable to the back of the ruter port that is marked DSL then you take that cable to the modem box conncet it to the port marked on the modem marked DSL
then you conncet the modem cable box to your phoneline box
conncet the power cable to the router and put the power on
now you put in the cd driver that came with your router
and you install the network drivers
now you need to set up a network id & password on the router
you will be told how to do all that when you install the drivers & software for the router
when you have install the drivers and software fo r the router
your need to restart the pc
when your back at the desktop
you will see a network icon in the taksbar by the pc time
if it has a red X on it right click it and click on enable
if you dont see a network icon in the taskbar
click on start/control panel
