How hard is that? Why don't people bother to get it right? Do they want to sound like they didn't graduate from 8th grade? Or do people (adults, I'm talking to you here) honestly not know the difference?

I agree that the spelling and grammar here are pretty bad. I don't agree that this is the result of Feminism, poor schools, etc.

You are definitely mistaken if you think that in the past things were different. If you want to see a lot of letters with really bad spelling and grammar, go down to your local historical society and dig through the old letters from the Civil War! They are virtually uninterpretable in many cases. And it wasn't just the common people.... there were lots of famous people who were really bad at spelling and grammar. Mark Twain, for instance, was notoriously inept. His publisher once wrote him a letter and complained that Mark (Sam Clemens) had sent him several stories with no punctuation at all. Clemens typed out a bunch of commas, periods, etc, on a piece of paper and sent it to the publisher - Here you go, he said, put them in yourself!

Jane Austen makes a comment about this as well, I think in her book, "Northanger Abbey" where she accuses women in particular of being totally ignorant of spelling and grammar.

You'll turn blue in the face trying to correct the spelling, and grammar in this site. The sad thing is that the people that are mutilating our language are the same ones that get offended when they are corrected or reminded of the fact. It says alot about the state of our educational system...

What you are complaining about represents the inevitable consequences of the "triumph" of feminism.

The feminists want control, and they've got it in one sector ofthe American economy.

Public education is a racket run by women with PhD degrees in "education." With the never-tested see-say reading method and the endless dumbing down of American education, you get corruption of the language as a necessary and inevitable result.

Our educational system ranks 27th of the 27 most advanced nations. We can't maintain our technological society at this rate. Children who are home-schooled do as well on the SAT tests and as well in college as those in public schools.

We are spending more per pupil on public education than ever. It's a whorehouse of incompetence.

By the way, children raised this way are also innumerate as well as illiterate.

I totally agree with you! I was a former English teacher and everytime I see people write like that I got sad over the corruption of the beautiful English language...

Did you also notice that:
lite instead of light
nite instead of night
U instead of you
4 instead of for
the list could go on and on....

As time goes on people start to think these are the correct ways...Something needs to be done!

It is no wonder why U.S. students are lagging so far behind other countries in terms of educational abilities.
I honestly believe people no longer care and too many others put up with it.
I try to ensure good grammer when I write but often find myself shortening things in e-mail and text messages.

I dare say that emails and instant messaging have played a large role in the destruction of grammar.
