There is a space under the deck stairs. It gets aft. sun. Now it is covered with prickly ivy crap. Is ther something I can plant now that will come up in the spring? I live in CT.

Forget about hosta if you're in deer country: it's salad. Wandering Jew isn't hardy in CT. Try Vinca minor or Vinca Major. Both have pretty flowers in the spring, which is where the color "periwinkle" came from.

Hostas!! They are a great plant that come up every year, they require very little effort, and they can grow anywhere!

you can plant "Purple Queen or Wandering Jew" this is very hearty ground cover and grows without hardly any effort.

ajuga, huechera both come in interesting colors, are low growing and pretty tough little plant kritters.
