I would suggest one of the best reasons is that very few women worked outside the home at that time, which means that they were in more contact with the children than the fathers. So if you want children (of both genders) to be educated, and do well, educate their mothers first.

People who are educated have a better sense of self-esteem.

By educating women, you work on closing the disparity between men and women, at least in terms of education and the subjects they can discuss as equals.
