His is number 1, no offense to Mario. If Gretzky was the same size as Mario, he would have been unstoppable.

me personaly i don't believe he is the best of all time. like jujubah_0...said he started his career at the right time cause if he would of played in the Rockets time or Gordie Howes time Gretzky would of been killed.

and the big thing is you cant really compare great players to eachother. Gordie Howe said nobody can do what Maurice Richard can do he wasnt the best skater but when he needed to score for the Habs he would at any cost, and nobody I meen nobody could do what he did. Gordie Howe on the other hand was a much more all around player that can skate and yes he played till he was 52 years old 32 years professional. 1000 more points then the Rocket over 1000 games more then the Rocket.

and with Mario Lemieux if he never had his cancer and all the injuries he was clearly a much all around player then Gretzky was and he was a better goal scorer. Gretzky had around 810 NHL goals and around 1050 goals NHL,WHA both counted on his professianal record. Mario Lemieux had just over 600 goals before he even played 900 games and that was half of the games that Gretzky played in his career. and Gretzky had a team from the biggining of his career. Lemieux had to play 4 years before they finaly got some good players to help win the Cup in the early 90's.

so see you can't compare players and say the best ever, records are ment to be broken, Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita played great together but only won one Cup. you Look at Marcel Dionne great player too, but never got the cup. Bobby Orr same with him he has 2 Cup's but with his knee injuries had to retire within 10 years and he was just getting in his prime, he was a D-MAN and he put over 100 mark and his +/- ratings where out a here with over a +100 plus minus ratings. and then you hade goalies the rules changed for them, they didnt wear maskes back in the day the wernt alowed to go down to the grown to stop a puck. Rules change and so does the players so we cant really compare todays Sidney Crosby to yesterdays Wayne Gretzky cause they are diferent rules.

GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why do people call him the "Great One"? Because he's the best hockey player to ever lace up a pair of skates! Google him and look up his stats. All-time goals, assists, points leader. He held or shared 61 NHL records at the time of his retirement. Make that 62 since he holds the record for having the most records! And he wasn't a selfish player that hogged the puck. In fact you can take away all his goals and he'll still be the all-time points leader. He has 1963 assists to Mark Messier's 1887 points. It's bizzare!!! Sure, Lemieux and Howe and Richard were all greats, but you asked for GREATEST, so the answer's WAYNE GRETZKY!!!!

Gretzky wasn't even the best of his own time, Lemieux was. Howe, Orr, Hull, and many others were great when hockey wasn't watered down with so many teams. There are a few players today who can be greater than Gretzky. Look at the team Gretzky was on when he won his Cups. Then look what he did with the rest of the teams he was on. He couldn't make his teams any better.

Wayne was never hit......How long would he have lasted, if he would have taken body checks like Hull, Orr, Howe, Mario, or even the Rocket? He had the advantage to concentrate on his skills, without worry of a cheap shot in the back of the head.
With that in mind, would he have scored all these goals, while looking over his shoulder?

Gretzky had a lot of goals, But was not a complete player. The best hockey player of all time (complete player) Bobby Orr. He was great at every aspect of the game. If his knees would of held up he would have more goals than Gretzky. Orr was great to watch he could skate so much better than everyone else. One time on a penalty kill he killed most of the penalty himself skating around with the puck. No one could take it away. Bobby Orr supersedes Gretzky in my opinion

_

First of all his name is spelled " Gretzky ". . Jesus.

Gretzky played at the right time for his abilities. I believe if he was in his prime 10 years earlier, or 10 years later he would have not achieved all his records.

It was apparent that the Oilers did not need him to win their 5th cup. In the same breath he could not do the same for the Kings, Blues, or Rangers.

I think Mario would have surpassed several records of Wayne's if injuries and cancer did not impact his career.
