for a while now, i've kept an axolotl in my 10gal at work as the office pet. he was very unique, and started a lot of conversations with visitors...but he died last week (yes, cause diagnosed, aquarium thoroughly disinfected).

now i need new ideas as to what i can keep in the office; while the axolotl was so neat, i don't want to just "replace" him. your whole vision will have to be in that 10gal (bigger tank won't fit), and can't be something that requires *daily* attention (i'm not in on the weekends). ideally, we're talking about something more "cool" than just plain ol goldfish, and hey, if you have clever non-animal terrarium ideas for a 10gal, throw those in too.

things that are right out:
poison dart frogs - no place to keep fruit fly cultures in the office
saltwater fish - require too much monitoring

other than that, get creative, share your wisdom!

You could fill it with candy and prizes!

Or if you really want pets, I would go with low-maintenance fish and some cool decorations. I have some black tetras that are fun to watch and don't seem too picky. I have a bamboo shrimp with them and he helps keep the aquarium clean.

Hermit crabs are interesting. You could get one or 2 in a 10 gallon. Get ones with pretty or funny shells, that'll be interesting. They are nocturnal though, don't move around much in the day.

Get a few different carnivorous plants. They are beautiful, unique, definitely conversation starters, and very low maintenance. They don't require insects to survive, they can absorb nutrition through their roots like regular plants. Do some research on them, you want to be educated about them and get the ones who will do best in that environment. Venus Fly Traps are really easy to keep.
Good Luck

How about a tarantula or a scorpion? You can just throw a few crickets and meal worms in for it and go away for the weekend. Just make sure it has a bowl of water. They are real conversation starters.

Especially the scorpion, did you know they glow in the dark under black light?

If you still want fish, try a violet goby (aka "dragon goby") they are very cool and don't get too big (maybe 6-8 inches). The face looks like a Chinese dragon and their body is about as big around as your finger.

They love shrimp pellets and frozen blood worms.

you could build a little beach scene and have a couple hermit crabs crawling around. or something that's a little more interesting than a plain ol goldfish is a koi, they look just like a gold fish but they get pretty big so theyre kinda neat. maybe a mouse? i dunno if that would work in an aquarium lol. well the hermit crabs are the easiest pets i can think of and they drink from a sponge that's interesting. lol!

How about a mini rain forest. Put a fountain in the middle and lots of different plants around it, have a spritzer that sprays the plants every once in a while. Ok, complicated I know, just an idea.
