I teach in a Montessori preschool/kindergarten. I was wondering, in regards to language, do you expect that the students starting school recognize and/or write lower case letters, upper case letters, or both? I normally focus on lower case letters in my classroom, except when a capital letter is used (beginning of a sentences, writing their name). What grade do you teach? Thanks!

As a second-language teacher, my teacher-trainers taught me that the variations in curves and straight lines in lower-case letters made them easier to identify (contrary to what has been written above me). For this reason, second-language teachers are encouraged to write new vocabulary terms in all lower-case letters. For the same reason, I would teach the students the lower-case letters first and slowly introduce capital letters and their uses afterwards. Honestly, look at this paragraph (or any other)- what is the ratio of lower-case to upper-case letters? See why it's good to teach those lower-case letters first?

It is better to teach children the entire alphabet either upper case or lower case at a time without mixing the two. Once they are established in one of the cases, then the other can be introduced as the equivalent. I would tend to teach children Upper Case first and here is why.

Upper case letters have more defined strokes and curves than lower case. Besides the fact that they are bigger means that they are simpler for children.

As their learning progresses, they fine tune and go into the finer details of lower case.

Children start to learn upper and lower case letters in Kindergarten. They learn lower case letters first. The only capital they learn is the one in their name. They need to concentrate on one thing at a time.

Nay for gender quotas of all kinds. in spite of the undeniable fact that, yay for the social encouragement and solicitation of underrepresented demographics into any field. i could seem at underrepresented adult males between universal college instructors a similar way i seem at underrepresented women people in technology and engineering: no quotas, no particular scholarships, no double standards, yet doing issues like elevating information of the gender inequality between college freshman and doing outreach classes to purpose to interrupt down any stigmas linked with one intercourse is somewhat a good ingredient to be doing.
