When I wake up, I can sing about 3 notes lower than usual, all the way to the last octave on the piano scale. Not only that, but my voice is much richer, thicker, and has a lot more timbre. Why does this happen and how can I harness this morning voice for the rest of the day?

Dont try, your voice is no where near ready for that kind of damage at that time of day......your voice is getting unrepairably damaged by you doing this, as it isnt warmed up, through speaking, and exercises. Always make sure you warm up and go through your scales before you sing as otherwise you will do damage to your throat and diaphragm........

I'm taking music classes in college which do require a lot of singing in the mornings and then the afternoons. For some reason men usually have better morning voices and women's voices are at their best in the afternoon.

A lot of the guys in my class, in order to keep their voices lower and thicker for the afternoon classes will smoke a cigarette before they know they have to sing. However, if you do not already smoke, I wouldn't advise starting that habit because your voice will pay for it later on.

Vocal chords tighten and thicken in disuse while we sleep, and as they return to active state in the morning we return to our normal range. You may like your morning voice, but it's actually not good for your chords to stay like that, which is why they adapt. The only way to harness that voice as your natural speaking pitch is not to speak in the morning, or to take a nap.

There's always booze and smoking too.

Yeah that's the case with me too. I can sing high in the evening and later afternoon but in the morning I am no where near that kind of pitch.
