Try "I got the Blues" by the Rolling Stones: track 2 of side two of "Sticky Fingers". ("And if ya don't believe what I'm sayin'--well it's 3:00 o'clock in the mornin', and baby, I'm singin' my song!)
Or even "Sister Morphine" later on the same side. That track is so sad, it's sorry.

"Melancholy Man", by the Moody Blues...I believe it is off of their L.P.: "Question of Balance"--but I could be wrong. They were popular in the late 60's & 70's, and this song was on one of their first 7 albums. The word "Melancholy" means the state of being sad, depressed, or gloomy. The tempo of the song is also quite slow & somber.

A lot of the smashing pumpkins songs are sad and depressing. I love Fade into you by Mazzy Star though...not so much sad as it is beautiful.
