What is the root cause of psychological distress and behavioral disorder?

There is no single cause linked to all psychological distress and/or behavioral disorder. Each person, each personality and each event or group of events is unique.

While I agree that abuse within the family is 99% of the cause, I would like to point out that the cycle is sometimes broken and the problem will not go on to future generations if the abused does not take on children.

If you have parents who fought bitterly, or there is bad blood in the family, or if you weren't taught how to trust others, you might be too discouraged to seek out a partner to have children with. Eventually, you loose interest and the cycle is broken.

The main root cause is the fact that, 99.9% of children who are physically, emotionally, psychologically and sexually abused, are abused within their own families. Fathers, Stepfathers and Grandfathers are the "Number 1" perpetrators of all forms of abuse, especially, the sexual abuse of young children. The secondary cause, which "ensures" abuse is continued, generation after generation, is - keeping the secret !
