I don't know, but I think snowboarding looks like more fun

Ahh! I hate stereotypes! Whatever people say, snowboarding is not just for teenagers and skiing is not just for old people... It's for everyone to enjoy! Snowboarding is a total fad and I think it stinks that now everyone who is going on a one day trip to the mountain starts off snowboarding. If you are going on a short trip to have fun with your family, and don't plan to do it three times every *week*, rent skis and schedule a lesson because it's easy and fun to learn to get down the mountain without hurting yourself and being a total nuisance to the other skiers around you. If you really want to snowboard and are actually commited to spending time and money (my number one rule is first time, TAKE A LESSON!) to make yourself better, then start snowboarding if you want. I personally am a speed freak and I don't care about catching air, which is why I love to ski. Both sports require time and effort to become really good at, but skiing is easist if you plan on visiting the mountain once a year.

Tricky question- snowboarding is harder to do the first few times, because you fall so much, but after the first two or three days you do it, you become much better
skiing on the other hand, you can learn the simple things in the first day, but it could take a whole season to get good.
I board, I skied for many many years, and I hated it, I tried snowboarding, and after the first few days of falling, i loved it. Snowboarding is obviously the better sport, plus you look alot cooler when you do it

In half-a-day you can learn to turn and stop in snowplough on skis if you're fairly athletic and it'll take one day if you're just average. And you won't fall that much doing it. This'll enable you to ski a really easy run with no real problems. By the end of 6 days you'll be able to ski down most blue runs with some effort and no style at all. It'll take you 10-20 weeks to look like you might know what you're doing and even then only if you are making an effort to do it right. It'll take you a lot longer to actually know what you're doing, but when you do, you'll be faster and more versatile than a snowboarder.

In half-a-day you can learn to stand and sideslip (edge slide) on a snowboard. By day's end you should be able to make pretty dodgy linked turns and will have definitely learnt to better appreciate the colours black and blue, as this will be the colour of most of your body. You will fall a lot doing this. This'll enable you to go up and down a really easy run falling a few dozen times. However by the end of day 3 you'll be able to board down most blue runs with little effort and some style. After that it'll take you 10-20 days to really look like you know what you're doing.

Bottom line:
Skiing easy and painless to learn the basic snowplough turn which bears little resemblance to what proper skiers do. Difficult and takes forever to get any good at it.
Snowboarding difficult and painful to learn even the basics. But the falling and pain and bruises only go on for 2 or 3 days and after that you will quickly be mistaken for a pro.

I have never skiied before but my sister has and she said that skiing is much easier than snowboarding. I snowboard so of course i'm going to say it's better..lol. My sister also said she thought snowboarding was more fun and skiing was boring. I can't really say cus i've never skiied before and i don't plan to..i'm hooked to snowboarding! I'd say it probably depends on the person. Snowboarding is very challanging and hard at first. It's really easy to give up. Just do whichever one appeals to you. Good luck and have fun!

They are both worthy sports to pick up, because they have very different styles.

They have different learning curves, so I'm not sure which connotation you mean by "master".

To stand up, not fall down, and make it down the mountain, alpine skiing is easier to pick up and be competent more quickly.

Snowboarding, on the other hand, is much more difficult to reach competence, being able to stand and make it down the mountain without falling. While carving (heading down the mountain with one end pointed down, rather than switching, making 'S' like turns) takes longer to master with snowboarding, skiing is easier.

However,
While more difficult to pick up initially, snowboarding is easier to "master" in regards to performing tricks, whereas skiing, while easy to begin, is much harder to master and perfect in this regard.

It is a personal preference. I know many people who enjoy one or the other (or both). My suggestion is to rent equipment for the first few times and try both.
Make sure that you give yourself time to try each though. At least three days of practice for the snowboard (skiing might not need as much, easier at the beginning, remember:)

Good Luck.

I used to be a skier, but switched to snowboarding. It's just the new thing to do, so better to learn now than later! Since I switched, I've had fewer injuries (no more sprained knees) and more fun! It's also easier to board the whole mountain when you first learn boarding as opposed to skiing. You can always be on the back edge of your board when it's super icy. Beginner skiers have to go down the same icy hill scooting on their butt!

Snowboarding, although the first few days will hurt. Definitely a steeper learning curve than skiing.

There was a statement made a long, long time ago about this question...

"I used to know a lot of people who used to ski, but I don't know anyone who used to snowboard."

Ski is much easier to master. As Snowboard is a later revolution of extreme sports, Ski has been around much longer as a sports compare to snowboard. Therefore, they are much more ppl knowing how to ski compare to snowboard. So it is a matter of who is the ppl that guided you.

Besides that, talent is another aspect of mastering the above mentioned sports.
