life is action . Death is sleep .
materials /matter never dies . the body made of matter is action less at death . but is is alive as much as the body of any living being . just put a piece of the dead tissue under the electron microscope and see the atoms of every element composing the
body . the atoms will e rimming with energy . The elctrons will be spinning around the proton in evey atom the same way they were while the body was alive . the proess is reversed after death .it is noe decomposition , while it was composition when the body was in action. Decompasd mattter is digested by eath and assimilated and made in to humus that might get absorbed in to he other beings like grass , plants , worms that might e eaten by birds that might caught by other humans or animals and eaten and so on the matter goes on chnaging from one to another in a process of recycling that is re-incarnation.

Life is the nature of the Soul,
Death is the nature of this Body..
Bhagavad Gita States
“As a person puts on new garments, giving up old ones, the soul similarly accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones." (BG 2.22)
This changing of Body is called Birth and Death.
"Real Life" is described in Bhagavad Gita. It means Full of Eternity(Consciousness), Knowledge and Bliss. (Sat -Chit-Ananda)
This is the nature of God, and soul being part of God, this is nature of Soul also.
But though God is all powerful and never falls down, we the soul have the tendency to fall down from our position.
In Such fallen state, this nature or True Life becomes covered. Soul takes a Body that is not eternal and dies, Soul takes a life that is full of forgetfulness and birth leads to forgetfulness of previous life too. Though we are trying to enjoy eternally, we always find that any enjoyment is limited.

Life and death are something like a dress or cover for the Soul. The Soul takes births and deaths until it unifies with the Creator. We wear dress cover for our perishable body and remove them when it becomes old, torn or unnecessary. Likewise the soul also takes new body(s) and desert it later, when becomes old or useless, in search of Great Salvation.
