There was something in the 70's called Micafill. It wasn't quite as fine as sawdust, granules a bit smaller than a rice crispie! silvery gold in colour?

It could be vermiculite. However it's sounds very much as though you have woodworm..get it checked before too long. Active in February.. March.

I doubt it will be asbestos as you would know by the colour and texture. Grey and quite lumpy when it disintergrates. Get your environmental office round from the council to check it out.

Stay out of your loft meanwhile.

It could be one of many different types of insulation pre-fibreglass, cork granules being one or asbestos, which was used in the past (50's-60's). Get it checked out by an environmental health officer, your local council should help. Good luck.

Is it all over the roof space or just in selected areas? just make sure it's not woodworm. We had powdery sawdust type "stuff" in our house and had to have the whole ground floor boards replaced as they were riddled with woodworm.

Are you sure it's not an infestation of termites, woodworm, wasps etc.?
Or just dry rot?
