I have laminate countertops in my home and I want a change. Can I just have some new laminate placed over the top of the old one? I went to the "home" store and they said I hade to completely remove the old countertops. That just didnt sound right....I should be able to just glue the new laminate down on top.....right??????

yes u can overlay it, be sure to sand the top and clean it very good so the glue will stick......remove the side bands and replace them with new ones that u will need to have made but not that costly......be sure to open the windows and vent the area while working inside...

Laminate Countertop Overlay

Best Practice is to remove the old counter. If the current laminate has any sort of texture to it I would risk wasting money on glue down until you have a new base to glue on.

You could lay down some AC plywood on top of the existing stuff and get better adhesion.

Best is to remove entire top, replace base sheet and laminate.

You can purchase preformed tops and really simplify your life as well.

The old one needs a good sanding. Use contact cement. The edge banding might not fit properly on the sides because it was made for a specific thickness. Might have to make your own
Good luck.
I did mine myself and it works fine
