Pro-life groups are lamenting the demise of a piece of legislation they say is supported by 80 percent of Americans -- a bill that would have required a minor girl's parents to be informed before she had an abortion, and that would have punished individuals who transported a minor across state lines for an abortion in order to circumvent parental notification laws in the girl's home state.

First of all, Dems did not "kill" the bill. Dems do not have the power to kill bills. Dems aren't even allowed to attend debates in Congress anymore. This is a one party government. Dems cannot be blamed for ANYTHING because they are not allowed to do anything! Republicans killed it.

As far as the bill itself, you need to get your story straight. First, noone says that 80% of Americans support it. Maybe 80% of the members of Pat Robertson's church do, but in the United States, 78% of the people are pro-choice, and over 80% were against your precious bill because it is unconstitutional.

The other reason was that the bill also called for adult women to have to tell their husbands. That makes the woman the property of the man! Do you want that?

Start reading the fine print in these bills. Only then can you have even the foggiest idea what is going on in this country. Quit the bumpersticker and headline mentality. If you are not even willing to do the research to make informed decisions, then you are not supporting democracy, and not supporting America. By knowingly remaining in ignorance, you are Anti-America because you are unable to defend the country from domestic enemies.

GooseandTonic...About a month ago, a resolution was put up in memorial of Katrina that was basically a bunch of fluff, but also a sweeping endorsement of the Bush Administration. The Dems were excluded from debate on the resolution and not even allowed to vote on it. The Republicans in Congress said that since they have the majority, it doesn't matter what the Dems think because they are already outvoted.

Protecting the minority is the entire purpose of a constitution in general (a real one anyway...not like Iraqs where the Bushies got to write in oil rights) and in particular, our Constitution! You guys still believe in that, right? The Constitution?

Remember...the protection of the minority also protects you. You get to go to the church of your choice because of the protection of minorities. Of course, under Republican leadership, there are several (like in Pasadena, CA) churches that are being told that they will lose their non-profit status if they don't only preach allowed messages! Sounds like the USSR, doesn't it? How is that Freedom of Religion? If this is allowed to happen, any church that teaches the words of Jesus will have their non-profit status taken away, which would bankrupt most churches.

That's why we have protection for the minority...so you can continue going to the Church that you want. So that you can continue to make most of the choices that you make. Remember, everyone is a minority...there is something in each of us that is different...and that makes us a minority of one. Each of us. Remember that! You are a minority, so you should be making sure that the rights of minorities are upheld.

The bill is called Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act. Not the "Parental Rights" bill.

This does not create good family communication where it does not already exist. It just creates more family disharmony and puts these kids at risk for abuse. Furthermore, statistics show that the bill itself is a waste of taxpayers time and dollars. Primarily because younger teenagers are more likely their parents about the decision to abort. About 90 percent of adolescents 14 or younger report that at least one of their parents knew of their decision.

That is the official Democratic stance.

Hope that helps you.

First of all, you distort the matter when you describe those you agree with as "pro-life", as though everyone who doesn't agree with you is somehow against life, which is clearly nonsense. What you are talking about is people who are "pro-choice" or "anti-choice"; you seem to be in the "anti-choice" camp. You have employed a sneaky lie, which doesn't say much for your character.

Second, as others have pointed out, the right-wingers control every branch of the government right now, so it is absurd to suggest that the government's failure to do as you believe they should is anyone's fault except the right-wing's. You have wrongly tried to blame others, which again doesn't say much for the kind of person you are.

Finally, the reason that these laws are generally opposed in the legislature (and are certain to be overturned in the courts, if passed) are because they fail to leave any way out for young girls who are victims of rape or abuse by the very parents you would require them to go to for permission to end their unwanted pregnancies. Generally, these types of laws draw greater support (like the 80 percent you wrongly assume support the "no-exceptions" measure the radical right favors) and can survive court challenges if the young girl has the option in such cases to obtain permission from a judge instead. Sadly, people like you, with the character failings I have already indicated, tend to view exceptions of any sort as unacceptable, adopting an "all-or-nothing" approach, which will always result in nothing, as long as democracy survives in this country.

I believe it is because of the special interest groups. Democrats and Republicans alike have lost perspective on what the American people want. They are not up there for the "public" anymore they are up there for the special interest groups and will do whatever they need to do to pad their own pockets. They have proved yet again they are not listening to the "majority" or to the American people. They are listening to the almighty dollar and the people that can put it into their pockets fastest and in the most amounts. We are no longer a democracy.

I'm not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a hidden measure in there that the Dems opposed. This is frequently done to pass unpopular laws or to get congressmen with upcoming elections to be looked upon badly by consituents because of voting against a popular law. Both parties do this.

I'm not saying that's it... but I wouldn't be surprised.

Why? Because they feel that the "right" to an abortion trumps anything else. Oh, and they think that the government is better equipped to raise your children and tell you what to think than you are. Quite simple really.

Corwyn -- what kind of crack do you use? It must be powerful. How dare you suggest that dems aren't "allowed" to attend "debates" anymore!! That is like saying they aren't allowed to VOTE when the time comes. In fact, it seems to me that dems tend to hold up more issues than they solve specifically because they ***** and moan about MINORITY RIGHTS.

I don't know why democrats killed it, but I'm glad they did. More and more these days the goverment is trying to tell us what to do or control how we do something. I say let the people be. If what I do doesn't have any effect on uninvolved parties, they have no business telling me I can't do it.

It gives too much power to the federal government.

I'm not sure what that has to do with the democrats, but that certainly would be a reason for opposing it.
