I have a laptop computer that I have been told needs a new motherboard. I have no idea what this is or how much it might be to fix. Will I lose everything I have saved like files and pictures?

The Motherboard is the Board on which the chip sits and is the one that connects to all the other peripherals. It's like the central nervous system that has the brain sitting on it and gives the brain the power and ability to communicate with the rest of the body.

Please use the link I've provided you with below to learn all about it at how stuff works. You might want to save this site to your favorites because you'll get all the information you need to understand how a lot of stuff works, in future.

Logically, since the information you've stored sits on the hard disc, there shouldn't be any loss when you change the damaged motherboard. However, it'd be a good idea to have a back up.

Oh, by the way, you'll find motherboard [mobo, slang abbreviation] prices also listed there and this could give you an indication of what it'll cost.

All the very best.

Cheers

It is the main part of the computer. A laptop one has to come from the manufacturer and won't be cheap. They are usually almost as expensive as a new one and it takes a few hours of shop time to replace it. You don't know enough to do this yourself.

I could do the work myself and I would get a new one. I know it is going to be enough that if it still is not under warranty it isn't going to be worth it.

Your data is probably still on the HD depending on what happened to cause the motherboard failure. You can put it into another computer and recover it. You need an adapter to plug into a desktop. Again, I don't think you know enough to do this.

You can take the whole thing to a repair shop and get an estimate for the motherboard and have them recover your pictures.

In the future BACK UP ANYTHING YOU DON"T WANT TO LOSE. All hard drives fail eventually and you can't always get the data back.

I have gone through all the answers and would suggest you to go for a motherboard replacement only if it is broken and get it replaced with the same make and model (preferably from the manufacturer) of the laptop. Doing this will keep all the stuff on your laptop intact. In case your laptop is out of warranty then you might find buying a new laptop under some trade in option (trade in with a working used laptop) cheaper. You may also like to check for someone who can build you a laptop using bare-bone laptops retaining your hard drive keeping your data intact.

One thing is for sure, files and pictures are not stored in the motherboard but in the Hard Disk... If your hard disk is ok then you can still access those files...

No problem if you just replace the motherboard with the same model...

Now!, changing motherboard is a lot, you need to consider a lot of things, such as the comapability of the memory, the CPU and etc.... This needs assistance to computer technicians or anyone who has knowledge to computers...

If it is still under warranty, it's best to have the shop ship to the manufacturer for repair. Even if they fix it, they will need to order it from manufacturer. So you can expect a long time for repair. All your data is on the hard drive, so it should not be affected by the repairs. Some, but not all shops routinely backup hard drives before they begin repairs. As a precaution try to save important data to a CD or DVD. As for cost, the shop will provide you with an estimate but at minimum will be $200. Typical labor rates are $80/hour.

With the cost of replacing a motherboard, you might as well get a brand new computer.

The motherboard is the heart of your computer. All the other parts attach to it. If they reinstall your original hard drive you'll still have your files. Still, you should back them up if you can before you send it off.
I'd get an estimate before I have them do the work.

your files are saved on a HARD DRIVE not the motherboard! so your files are fine!
your motherboard may be a cost a lot to get fixed so i would get an estimate... and see if youi can get someone to save your files or at the least remove your hard drive before sending it in to get fixed!

The mother bouar is the main board on the computer, Its the board that everything else connects to. You might lose all your info it the hard drive has to be formatted. You can try to get someone to back up you info on another computer by pugging in your hard drive on their machine.
