I mean, look at the way things are. People get married on reality tv shows to people they barely know because other people they don't know voted on it. Divorce is at an all time high, do I have to remind you guys of Slutteny Spears' wedding in Las Vegas that was annuled the next day? People are getting married for all the wrong reasons, for money, for prestiege, for just being able to say they are married.

Really, people, how could allowing gay people to get married really make things any worse?

It's like "It's ok to get married to somene you've never met on tv for a million dollers, it's ok to marry someone you're not in love with for money, it's ok to force someone it to marriage by getting pregnant, and it's ok to get married six or seven times and divorce them each after less than a year, but God forbid someone get married to someone they're in love with that just so happens to be of the same gender, because that will distroy the sanctity of marriage!"

Discuss.

I agree...it's just an excuse to discriminate against gay people.

I've been married for 18 years and every day has been good. my wife and me got married before a priest to appease the people in our lives, but we're both agnostic (we recently went to a surprise birthday party for the priest who performed the ceremony at a baptist church that turned out to be a religious service, felt like we were in the twilight zone.) Back to the question, I don't pretend to know what it's like to be gay, but it sounds a thought you're more disturbed by the fact that a ceremony between same sex couples is not legally recognized. If that is the case, it shouldn't be so important considering it's only about legal recognition of some ritual performed by some person who claims to be a spokesperson for a god that he has never seen or had a two way conversation with that may or most likely may not exist. Commitment goes way beyond all of that.

You bring up a very good issue. I married for love. I was lucky. I am not gay but I am sure gay people can love too. marriage should only be for love. if someone is not in love, use birth control ( no offense meant. ). kids suffer because of broken relationships. I was taught to believe marriage was an act of god between a man and a woman, but gay people can want to be together too. so I do not really know the solution for that. You bring up a good point!! gay people would not hurt relationship issues if they wanted to be together for love. straight people are messing stuff up as good as the rest of the world. lol. good luck all.

Well yes I will agree with you on this. I, shamefully, have been married three times. I married my first husband twice because I was an idiot, we were high school sweeties and never could get over each other. The third time that I married, I married for love, he married to try to get my house, go figure. There are a lot of gay and lesibian couples who like you, I think should be allowed to marry thier life partners. They live legitimate and loving lives and share a lot of happiness together, and they make me jealous of thier relationship.

Fact from fiction, truth from diction. Same sex marriage is DOA even if you take out the extreme right. Many of the points you laid out does make a travesty and a hypocrisy of traditional marriage. Amd many try to justify shacking up by saying marriage is just a piece of paper. Becsue they want committment from their SO, but not officially. If things go South they need to be able to make a quick clean get away.

I think one of the biggest reason is if same sex marriages were allowed to fly. Plural marriages would follow. And as this Administration has demonstrated, it doesn't like to be wrong. The Feds have fought so long and hard to quash polygamy they would be devastated to have to capitulate to it. It would be about as bad as having to admit they could not win the war on drugs and legalize it.

Part of it is economics. If companies that offer health benefits had to extend them to multiple spouses with half a dozen children or more. they would be paying way more on heath for that worker than they would be getting work out of them. Not to mention the marriage tax break they would get.

And if there are adopted children and a divorce what a mess that could be. Or child support. Who the person leaving a polygamous marriage have to pay support for all the children or just the ones with his DNA? If there are still one or more other spouses left, would alimony still need to be paid? Too much head ache, and no one wants to try to wrestle that beast to the ground.
