I could provide you with a summary, but that would be distinctly unfair to you.

Plato's "Republic" is one of the most influencial documents ever written regarding man's responsibilities in governing.

If you do not read this yourself, you will miss out on some very dynamic, and thought-provoking literature. There's a reason why Plato is known as the "Father of Logic". Please do yourself a favor, read it, and re-read it until you comprehend it. You will be far better off for the effort.

I read it first when I was a teenager and didn't understand it. I read it again as a post-grad and found it one of the most disturbing books I had ever read. Luckily for us Aristotle's Ethics has had much more influence. I am also not going to give you a summary but maybe a couple of questions can help you focus on the key issues. How is Plato saying that society should be organized? Is he talking about a society where all people are equal and have an equal share in deciding how the country should be governed or is he suggesting that there should be a ruling class with power over everybody else? What is his reasoning for coming to a conclusion that does not propose democratic government?

According to Plato there are three kind of people. 1-The men of desire, 2-The men of emotion and courage, 3-The men of wisdom. Plato says that the last one that is the Philosopher king should rule the rest.
