Id like to know how much space I can add on to my house. I have 8 ft on the side of my house and would like to expand on the side and want to know where I can find info on how much space I need to have there. Do I get that info from the city planning? Or is it on a county level? Or a state level? Who should I approach for this kind of info? Im in Los Angeles County. Thanks!

If you live within city limits, you would likely find what you need in that city's building codes.

If you live in an unincorporated part of the county, I'd try them, first.

As a rule of thumb, start as locally as you can get, then work your way up to the state level.

Go to your city hall and speak with your planning and zoning department.

There are usually restrictions on how close you can get to you property line before you need a variance.

Usually building codes are city by city.

Your planning department will have that information. You will need to have the three sets of numbers from your property tax bill; book #, map # and plot #, or something like that.

You can contact a building contractor. They would know what the codes are or would be able to point you in the right direction.

Call your local county office, they will be able to direct you to whom you need to speak with.
