I wouldn't ask the guy if he likes you. Just let things happen naturally and if he does like you, he will find ways to let you know.
If he seems shy you can make attempts to talk to him. Find out what interests he has and ask him questions about it, or just chat with him.
If he likes you he will let you know.

If you really think the answer is no then don't ask him. Don't put yourself in such an awkward position unless you have strong reasons to believe he does like you. i.e. he's shown serious interest in you.

just tell him,that you were just kidding and that you're actually doing a project on people's reactions in situations like this.then thank him for and walk on.if he acts strangely and ask you more,play along.if not just leav as if nothings happened
