No, small children do not understand "time out" or reasoning etc. BUT, they do respond to a light spanking. Parents need to take back control of their kids. I see so many children that are out of control and you always hear the parents threaten "I'm going to count to 3", then do so & nothing happens. I think a lot of the problems with society is that people (even kids) are generally not held accountable for their actions.

Spanking should be a last resort in discipline. And it should be for a proper reason. To spank a child because 'they are being a child' - i.e. got their clothes dirty, didn't eat all their dinner, or anything that you could talk to them about, is not a reason for spanking; that is abuse. If a child is disrespectful and you have explained that they should not say/do what they are saying/doing and they continue to do it, then yes, a swat on the bottom is not inapproriate. It is important to follow-up afterwards and tell the child that you love them, but not their actions. Also, NEVER swat a child anywhere other than the bottom - you could cause serious injuries - especially if you are angry! And NEVER use anything other than your opened hand. Also, be considerate of other people; take the child aside - to another room - and swat them; not in front of other people, if possible. No one likes to see it, even if the child acted out of disrespect.

I think that a lot depends on the parent..abusive parents will abuse with or without a no spanking law...When I was a child I got spanked..but I really think I should have been spanked until a later age..my parents oughta have paddled me as a teen ager for many of the things I did...However I have never spanked my son...but then he responds to talking and taking away privalleges...Different strokes for different folks but abuse is wrong. Anyone who abuses a child should spend the rest of their child bearing years in prison or be steralized...There is a difference between spanking and abuse.

Sorry, but I got spanked. Up to a certain age, it was effective. by the time I was 9, it was just insulting.
But you know what? Kids today aren't being spanked, and they are spoiled little brats. The kids coming up today have NO RESPECT for their parents, their teachers or anyone. They have a sense of entitlement, that they don't have to lift a finger to earn anything. maybe some spanking would have taught them that sometimes you have to PAY for your behavior, that life isn't always fair and that there are CONSEQUENCES for your behavior. Because the kids today have NO idea how to behave. and then they get out of school - and have to work for a living - they will be in for a BIG SHOCK.

You don't have kids DO YOU ???!?!??!?! Because IF you did, you'd realize what an idealistic, pansy-@$$, liberal, BS idea this REALLY is. Where IS that law at ? France ????
NO person deserves to be abused ! BUT...there IS a difference between abuse and discipline !!!!! Watch the news ! Read the newspaper ! Look around you ! Do you NOT see what our society is becoming ???!?!??!?! We have gotten away from disciplining our children and holding them accountable for their actions.
It is the exact mentality you describe that is going to lead to the degradation of, not only our society, but also our country. I have to sound extreme and alarming, but............spanking never killed me. I never went to school and shot anyone. I've never hit/abused a woman or a child. I've never been arrested. Hmmm, must not been such a bad thing after all...........

Remind me to avoid those places. The trend nowadays is not to use corporal punishment when dealing with kids. I know for a fact that in some cases this worked and worked well and the kids have grown into ideal and responsible adults.
however...there are times when a point needs to be driven home and a swat or two does that just fine. I'm not talking about beating the kid with the buckle end of a belt either for those who are horrified but yeah....your kid needs a good swat once and awhile if all other methods have failed.

Yes parents should definately spank their kids, not beat them. I can't stand being around people who let their kids run all over them because they are too afraid to hurt their kids feelings and spank them. You want to see them behave, spank them in the middle of the grocery store, like we got when we were kids because we didn't behave. The parents that don't spank their kids are most of the problem in the U.S.

I agree with spanking..not beating a child but a swat across the butt with a hand is a firm reminder that they need to listen..thank god i haven't had to go that far with my child yet but if they would need it ,,you bet..i feel the parent has to have set early on guidelines to make the child listen..spanking isn't always right or wrong, depends on the situation and how it is used..every situation is differant..

Heck no!!! I firmly believe in "spare the rod, spoil the child". Just look at kids today?? I don't believe in abusing a child, but a little paddle on the butt and a good dose of reality checking and humility will go along way. Also, I think this should be reserved for kids under the age of reasoning. You can't talk them into behaving (not infants, of course). They might be frightened of you a little while, but I guarantee that it will turn to respect when they get older. Godlove ya!
