Stainless Steel 18/10 grade. Can't go wrong with that. I like Kitchenaid, but any Stainless Steel 18/10 is going to be pretty well made. Just make sure the whole pot is 18/10, not just the bottom.

Altho they might be a tad more expensive than the average, these pots & pans will hold up & give you years of really excellent service - CALPHALON! Kohls stores sell them & you can usually get a great deal on them when they have sales. I'm not kidding, tho, you will not be sorry & the money you lay out now will prevent you from having to spend money on replacements in the future. Also, Ultrex brand - I think on Home Shopping Network - are really good too. If you don't want to fork over big bucks, try Farberware, good & solid. Also, can't go wrong with the Kitchen Aid line! Happy Cooking!!!

Thick metal bottoms are important for heat distribution. For sauce pans and stock pots, heavy anodized aluminum, such as Calphalon. For skillets, get one small and one large Teflon coated, one cast iron, and one large stainless. Except for cast iron, purchase skillets which are rounded from bottom to side so that you can flip food to mix rather than stir.
Go to Food Network website, then to Good Eats or Alton Brown page for recommendations with swcientific explanation. Also make a visit to your local home kitchen specialty store.

I got the cook's essentials from QVC. I love them. Have had them over a year now and they still look brand new.
