Yes. As long as it has the definitions of the Malware trying to install itself. You are very safe using Spybot. Do not rely on it as your only AS program. You need to have at least three. Add SpywareBlaster to the programs. It blocks programs from installing. It does not scan and remove.

You're real question is: can I get away with free resident protection from Tea Timer rather than paying for it from Ewido? There's no guarantee that resident protection will pick up every little nasty bug out there on the internet; I have used Tea Timer and didn't like it. In fact I am not a big fan of Spybot full stop but it is handy to have as a back up. Even Winpatrol (the free version doesn't have real time monitoring but checks your system every few minutes for startups, BHOs etc) is more useful to me.
http://www.winpatrol.com/
If you want free resident protection from spyware have a look at Spyware Terminator - it's packed with features, including HIPS and integration with the ClamWin antivirus database
http://www.snapfiles.com/goto.php?id=110250&t=87463528&d=7130210&gourl=/get/spywareterminator.html
Spyware is evolving all the time and the research required to maintain databases and to test malware is considerable - not many freeware solutions can comptete with companies such as Webroot and PC Tools, especially when it comes to rootkits -
Spysweeper and Spyware Doctor have some of the best resident protection modules available. Free isn't always best!

Yes Spybot is as good as any other product. It presently blocks or blacklist 1174 as protection for your over-all system settings! The problem is that people do not make use of the entire program and expect it to run without them configuring it and using the tools that it offers you!

Honestly? It's like asking if strawberry jam is better than blueberry jam. You could very well, install one, curse it, then install the other and like it better. It will be a personal preference based on your intuitiveness to the particular inerfaces. Both have pop-ups that let you know something's requesting a change. So if you're trying to install something, you can allow it. If something tries to install secretly, you'll get the same warning asking to allow or disallow.
