Stay at one of the Holiday Inn Express Hotels (there are two) in Quarto 'd Altino, just outside of Venice. You can take the train right into Venice with no hassles and it is much cheaper...

you know...i hope you are traveling light if you are going to venice...if not..you'll have to drag your luggage up and down stairs and bridges since there is no cars or transportation...and the maps....pretty much nonexistent...I'd recommend staying at the hotel in Mestre....right across from the train station to Venice. It's only a 5 minute ride and so much more convenient. if you check out hotels.com it has that hotel...I can't remember the name of it....but it has all the amenities.

go to the hotel union in the train station and ask them for the cheapest place with an elevator. They'll hook you up nicely. Its easy especially now when turism is low
