In the past 3 weeks 2 kids have been caught with guns at my kids high school. We live in a suburban area - where you normally do not see a lot of violence in schools. This problem is epidemic - and something needs to be done - quickly!!!!!!
BTW - I think the Federal government should have to fund the metal detectors! Help protect our kids! How many more kids, teachers have to die before action is taken. Do not leave this up to local governments - this should be a federal mandate.

I do not considered metal detectors the complete answer - but it needs to be a first step! It would help act a a deterrent! Federal government funding of metal detectors along with other deterrents created on local/state/federal levels.

You can not control the parenting at home!!!! - but you can help control kids or adults entering a school with guns, knives, etc. BTW to the answerer that said they did not want their tax dollars going towards metal detectors in schools - do some research on government pork barrel spending - see some of the crazy things that your tax dollars are supporting!!!!!! Metal detectors in schools is not crazy spending!!!!!

0976, has the right idea, before you start putting all the blame on all outside circumstances, start with bad to no parenting. children from ALL backgrounds in America are being raised by game systems and television. parents don't seem to know anything about their children any more. just look at the serious questions you see on here, some are fake lots are not.
metal detectors should be paid for by parents, i don't want my tax dollars being used to fix a problem that parents are 90% to blame for.
YES my money does go to more stupid cause than this but this is preventable. you can't control homes?? so parents get to just throw their hands up in the air and blame the government for a child that needs help. IT (no matter what it is) always starts at home.

i agree that they should, but all those scary and wacko kids still find a way to get it into school, because they have cars or they have other poeple helping them, even thought metal detectors would be a very good idea i dont think that it will fix the problem

I agree 100%. Unfortunately, the school's in my area use the city money to install metal detectors, and as far as I know, have only done so to the High Schools and Middle Schools.

You are right...they should be mandatory.
I also think it should be a law that if the government is going to pay for the metal detectors, all the kids must wear pretty pink tutus.
You can't shoot someone when you are wearing a tutu...it just would be silly.

Even in the smallest of court houses there are now the metal detectors why should our children's lives be any less protected than our criminals?
I agree with you.... why don't you start an on line petition? I will sign it and sent to our governed body's.

This is not a problem of federal law... it is the problem of a break-down in society. Why should all children have to be treated as prisoners because a few parents CANNOT or WILL NOT do their jobs? As far as I'm concerned, any parent of a school shooter who is not an adult should be held JUST as responsible as the actual shooter.

They should have metal detectors and an armed guard at the main entrance. Grant it wouldn't have helped in the Amish school as they would not have wanted the guard and such, but our schools are just too easy to get access to.

Why does anyone think giving up even more of our freedom to the government could ever be the answer to any problem? If everyone home-schooled, there would be no need for even more government intervention into our private lives.

I think something should be done, however, I'm not sure that metal detectors are the answer.

No, but I think the kids caught with guns should be tried as an adult regardless of age, thrown into adult jail and do adult time. You will want to be sure to tell the other kids of each time they are gang raped to get the point across that they better behave themselves.
