A lot of people seem to be scared of Clowns and this strikes me as odd. They are supposed to be an apitimy of laughter and good nature. So why all the fear???

Hmm...Lot of reasons, really. The wearing of a mask is one thing - separates us from the truth of them. Secondly of course, the emotion on the mask is usually either extravagantly happy or sad - either way, this can get under people's skins. Finally, there's the idea of the tragic clown, and what it means - that whatever is on the outside is not necessarily a reflection of the human being underneath - that means clowns can do exactly the same sorts of bad things as other human beings, but they do it with a painted smiling mask on their face...just creeps people out. Examples of people who give clowning a bad name, like Gacy, serve to underline that creepy factor.

I think it is because of the scary movies that have clown in them pretending to kill someone. Or maybe it is just a bad experience they have had when they were a child that they are still scared of clowns as they get older. I dont know really.

Not certain why but they're very disturbing. I also find anyone in a costume frightening, Disneyland would be my idea of hell. I remember getting chased round Woolworths by Bertie Bassett as a child, a fear that was only compunded by getting touched up by Jerry (of the Tom and variety) on a trip to Ireland as a teenager!!!

Many years ago there was a movie about clowns going crazy and killing children. For some reason that thought still freaks people out.

The make up makes allows them to mischievously hide their true intentions and this transforms their bright smiles and rosy cheeks into the antithesis of what they were meant to be.

Because they are not what they seem to be. (and they're obvious about the deception) Unlike normal people who hide behind their 'normal' faces

I always think they are possessed. They all have an evil look to them, behind that fake smile.
