If you have a society in which firearms are freely available and often owned by unstable individuals, what do you expect? This terrible tragedy will no doubt be repeated again and again.
Regrettably, the NRA influences so many legislators that the chances of gun restriction being imposed are remote.
It's surprising that an ambitious lawyer hasn't taken apart the 'right to bear arms' part of the US Constitution and shown it for what it is - an out of date statement. The founding fathers inserted that particular bit of the Constitution when the USA had no national army - hence the words 'the right to bear arms in the _absence_ of a standing army'.
Well, the USA has had the world's most powerful standing army for the past century, hence those lines of the Constitution are surely now redundant, since there is now no need for individuals to have ownership of such deadly weapons. [Why does any one in the USA need an assault rifle or a machine gun in his home?!]
However, I suppose if some brave lawyer did stand up to challenge the 'right to bear arms' section, s/he would end up shot dead by some rednecked machoman. It's the American way.
In a country where school children are shot on a regular basis, where disgruntled workers shoot their former colleagues and bosses, where the National Guard had no compunction in shooting dead protesting university students, where the Attica atrocities occurred, what can you expect?
In America, the gun is king.

I think we need to put spanking and God back into our schools. It is a sad, sad world when even the Amish are touched by these types of things. I thank God ever day that my husband makes enough for us to get by so I can raise and home school my children. The lack of respect that children have these days is a glimpse into our future. Take a look around at all the rude people in the world. Can't even get through the grocery store without seeing something rude or hearing something rude. SAD! It starts at home and children just aren't being raised to show respect.

I believe it's absolutely tragic.
People need to get help for there anger issues before it gets out of hand.
Most of the time these senseless killings could be prevented if people would only watch for the warnings signs.
I think they should work on an advanced security system of some sort.

I'm sad, and heres why. When I was only 11 years old in 1972 I got shot. I know what it felt like, the trauma that can remain for many years to come, and the fear of being paralized and possable death. My heart goes out to the victums and their families. I try to tell others my story incase that slight chance they may think twice about guns.

crazy. The amish school house is not far from where I live. Very sad! God Bless all those victims and their families! Why attack the amish??? They are good people. What gets me is how they keep saying that something happened to the guy 20 years ago involving girls...WHAT WAS IT???!!! What the f#$% could have happened to him that was so bad he had to take it out on young amish school girls?! I mean killing anybody is wrong, but you would think that maybe he'd seek out these girls that did whatever it was to him and go after them??!!!

The shooting, at the Amish country, just proves that there is no place safe. And there never will be. I plan on never having kids because our world is getting worse. This is a horrible place for kids to grow up in.

I think that people have lost respect for humanity. It might have started in the 50's when women started to go to work. Then there was no more conscience for our kids as it escalated to where both parents have to be out of the home in order to make it with today's prices(which really is mostly high due to greed)

I think it is time to beef up security in our schools. This needs to be done w/ gov't help. My kids go to a very small Christian school that is low on funds...I'm sure they are not alone. Private schools can not get the funding for security in the buildings and this is now obviously needed. I hope our gov't see's this and that state funding for ALL schools will be given to make them safe. Every child deserves that right no matter what color, faith etc...security needs to be a right and equal to all!!

It is one more tragedy. It should teach us to look at ourselves and see if we are carrying any grudges, that after 20 years may turn to murder. It teaches us that any mentally unstable person can enter our schools while they are in session, and torture and murder inocent children
