The President and VP are elected to a 4 year term. They can be re-elected once, and serve no longer than 10 years combined.

For Example: If Bush were to pass away right this moment, Cheney would take his place, but Cheney would also be elligible to become President for 2 terms of his own, because that would only bring the total years served to just under 10.

This is why Bush and Clinton are both now inelligible to be on the ballot for VP, as a VP must be able to be President for at least a full term, just in case.

The president is only elected for 4 years per term of office and can only run for 2 terms to only serve a total of 8 years in a lifetime.
