i'm switching from name brand to generic birth control and need to know how long i should use a 2nd form of protection once i transition to the new pill

30 days is more than enough....and ask your pharmacist to ensure that the generic brand they are dispensing has at least an AB rating.

How long have you been on the name brand birth control? If you have been on it consistantly for a few months and make the switch during your period then you dont have to use a back method at all. Just read the directions that come with it and they will tell you how to do it correctly. If it makes you feel better you can use a back up method for a week but if you do the transition correctly you wont need one.

If you are changing dosage at all, then at least until you have taken seven active pills in a row - but if they have the same proportions of the same drugs as your other one, then you'll be protected right away - doesn't matter if the name on the packet changes if its the same drug.

my doctor reccommended to use a back up for the first month
