They can chase you until you tell them to stop. They cannot garnish your benefits and if your benefits is the only income you have, you're probably judgment proof. The Anti-Assignment clause of the Social Security Act, 42 U.S.C. §407(a), states that a person's entitlement to Social Security payments shall not "be subject to execution, levy, garnishment, or other legal process." There is an exception to this regarding student loans.

You should probably contact a credit counseling agency in your area.

Yes, but only debts to the Government, like if you collected welfare or owe back child support. They won't garnish your checks for bad debts like credit cards, medical bills, etc..

In the UK, they can take Council Tax, Fines and Child Support direct from benefits.

My dad just got approved for SSI. He was informed that no one can touch his SSI income for debts. Nor can his monthly payments be garnished.

NO but they should !!

How dare some people go through life screwing over others then expect to get off scott free! These people who do this will get what they have coming one way or another so live your life respecting others and yours will get only better!

Shame on ALL you who are NOT paying what you owe others!!!
