What do they teach their kids at school? Seems that it's a stupid idea to live like they do figuring times change and they'll become dependant on the technology they don't want to accept.

Do they pay taxes, do they refuse to vote using an electronic voting machine? Do they have to insure their horse drawn carriages like we insure our cars?

Convinced - From what i've said where do you get me saying it's ok to shoot them or for the event that happened to be justified. Maybe it is you who feels that way and tries to covert it up by blaming others.

They pay taxes, they don't vote at all. They'll use mechanical devices, but not electronics. I don't understand their reasoning behind refusing technology, but there way of life as stood for 300 years or more (started in Germany) so why knock it?

Most Amish schools teach children the basics, including English, Pennsylvania Deutsch, and High German. The Amish do not attend school beyond the eighth grade because they believe strongly in humility.

They Amish do pay taxes, though they do not participate in programs typically funded by taxes, like Social Security.

The Amish do not typically vote, though it is not against their religion. Their religion forbids holding political office or engaging in
campaigns, so they feel that it's "inconsistent to turn around and vote."

Not all technology is shunned by the Amish. Each group adopts what they feel will allow them to continue their lives in a plain and humble fashion.

Regardless of what a person's religious backgrounds on, one cannot say that they have no choice but to become dependent on technology. We can all reject or accept technology so long as we're comfortable with our lives.

The Amish are some of the most community oriented people in the world.

They do not shun all technology. They have phones, and are fully aware of pop stars, movies and tv shows. They choose a lifestyle that creates more dependance on the group, rather than the independance of an individual.

They pay taxes, insure their buggies and follow laws. They also have their share of 'big city' problems, too.

They've been living like that for a long time, and it works for them. They aren't criticising you. If you have any serious interest in understanding the Amish way of life, read about it here:

Yes, they do pay taxes. No, they are not required to insure their buggies, because they are not "motor vehicles", and most of them don't believe in insurance. Some Amish people don't vote at all, but others do. I would expect accomodations would be made for those who wish to vote but don't want to use the electronic machines. THAT is the most interesting question you have asked, and I intend to look into it a bit more.

Actually, in some ways these people have the better life. They will know how to live without technology if something big were to happen and it all go out the window!

They will be more prepared than us.

I sometimes wish for that simple life, with hard work.

But look at me, I am at a computer and will buy my food later tonight.

Amish people teach the basics reading, writing and arithmetic. They are law abiding people, they love their children and don't ask for government assistance. They render unto Cesar that which is Cesar's. They are totally self sufficient, take care of their elderly and provide for their neighbors in time of need and crisis. As far as not being in the technology age, has it really been an all positive thing. I think we could learn some valuable lessons from them.

Your line of thought is narrow calling it stupid.

Their lifestyle is based upon sound Germanic Christian doctrine, and seems quite comfortable, peaceful, and satisfying.

They have changed in some small ways to incorporate some technology... and shunned many other technologies that just clutter up our lives.

Note HOW many people take vacations seeking just the kind of life that they live each day... to escape the phone, cell-phone, pager, commute, and crowds.

My brother lives a rural and independent life... Power for Wind & Solar, well-water and a septic system, heat from wood/pellet stove (we cut our our firewood), and 60% of food from the property and neighbors.

I take MY vacations working his ranch.

See how briskly you may weave in, out, and around the piles with no need any on your tires. this is u . s . exciting.

The Amish did not shoot anybody.
It was a plain old good american boy outside the Amish community.

So what is the deal--5 girls are dead-that a big deal.
The Amish did not provoke this shooting.
Have you even bothered to read about the situation?

How many Amish people have been involved in schools shootings across America?
