vcd mean's--video compact disc
dvd mean's--digital versatile disc

the difference is this that dvd store's much more data than a vcd, for example if u buy vcd of a 3 hour movie it will come in 3-4 seperate disc's but if u buy dvd of a 3-hour movie then the whole movie just be available in one single disc only ,bcz of more storage capability

video compact disc-VCD
digital versatile disc-DVD

actually speaking, dvds are better than vcds. the difference is that dvds have a large storage capacity than vcds. like for example, take the film pirates of the caribbean 2. this is almost a 3 and a half hour film. a dvd can store this whole film in one cd, whereas vcd takes 2-3 cds to store this film. [by the way, thanks for the 2 points]
