Yesterday I was driving back to school and my car, which is a '94 Mercury Sable, has been acting wierd for a period of time. Sometimes when I accellerate or take off around a corner its like my car tries to shift into second gear, gets stuck makes a grinding or a shudder type noise and then continues on just fine. So when I got off the interstate yesterday I noticed some white smoke and a bad smell coming out of my car...I parked it and when I got out there was some faint white smoke coming out from under the hood and I think a rather large puddle of dark liquid under my car. I checked the oil before I left and it was at the same place after I parked it. What could this be? Please help. Thanks.

better get it towed to the nearest tranny shop :(

the white smoke may not be related, could be a whole new problem with the radiator, check the water after it cools.

It may or may not be the transmission. The grinding noise you hear may be from the front wheel drive transaxle. usually a rubber boot surrounds the bearing to protect the wheel bearing. Once this rubber boot breaks, the bearing becomes contaminated with material and causes the bearing to fal. If it is bad, look into buying a complete rebuilt 1/2 shaft. This is cheaper and quicker to replace than having someone install a brand new bearing and boot. As far as the white smoke and bad smell, this may be a seperate problem. Could be a coolant leak, but anything else from here on out would be a guess on my part and i dont want to make guess without seeing for myself which i cant do. So do the next best thing and visit a reputable mechanic in your area. Ask others who have used a mechanic from your friends or family and see what they say about going to certain garage centers and mechanics. Get a 2nd opinion if you must. Prices fluctuate by the garage.
good luck

For the turning around corners and it shifting into second gear I think your tranny is on its wayout the door!! For the smoke coming from under your hood sounds like you have a coolant leak some were have it checked out and Good luck!!!

Yep sounds like you have trans troubles. Those are what we refer to as disposable trans, because they usually cost more for the parts that tear up than another trans with a warranty costs. The white smoke that you seen was most likely where the leaking trans fluid had come into contact with exhast and was "burning off"
