Each car has an ideal operating temperature it is designed to run at. It takes a little time for the car to reach that temperature at which point it starts to burn off moisture that may have built up in the oil and fuel combustion is more complete.
Hard acceleration does not make short trips easier on the engine. Hard acceleration with cold oil is one of the worst things you can do for you engine.

Yeah, what that guy above me said AND usually, fuel will harden around the spark plugs and some injectors when it's released slowly (especially when accelerating slow and driving slowly)
To remedy this, you'll have to get on a highway and accelerate hard (FOLLOW LOCAL LAWS AND SPEED LIMITS!). An even safer way (but not free) is to buy those fuel treatment/detergents.

stopping and staring are harder on the car then just driving for long periods of time. Physics, object in motion will tend to stay in motion, object at rest will tent to stay at rest. When you stop and start you are enacting great force on the car, which will cause wear and tear.

More starts and stops, the engine doesn't get full use, making fuel not burn efficiently and leaving residue that can clog the engine, general wear and tear.
