Are you doing it because you like the flexibility or to get your foot in the door? (Or another reason?) Any other comments? (I just started subbing yesterday and I'm going back tomorrow, so I'm not sure what I'm in for yet!)

I love subbing....

It gives you the chance to teach and work with the kids, and then if you come across that class that is just impossible, you know that you never have to go back to them again ;)

How much work depends on the school system. Where I live now each school hires their own subs, and so work is scarce. I then volunteer in the schools a lot, kinda helps then when I walk in the door of the classroom as the kids yell hooray instead of thinking, "Oh cool a sub....how can we make HIS life miserable today". I did work in a system that used a computerized directory (name escapes me now) that allowed you to sign up for work on any given day, and more than likely you got to work that day. That way you could work full time when you wanted and still head for the beach when you wanted.

Good luck, make sure to use all available resources. It works a lot better to get on the kids "good side". (One school I worked at, on my first day I told the kids that the more work they got done the longer they would have for recess.... they were completely done with all the lesson plans by 1:30, instead of a 10 minute recess we had 1 hour, and when I went back to sub a week later, the entire school knew who I was, and never had a bit of trouble with any class there....)
