That happens to my fingernails too, and they aren't very long at all. It is because you type using your finger tips instead of your finger, which makes the nail bend when it grows out. Watch your fingers when you type and you will see that the nail is always pushing against the keys!

Fingernails and the nails on your toes are actually very compressed hair...just the facts.
And just like hair, as they grow, gravity takes care of the rest. Not to mention that they are bent in an inward angle. They are not flat.

Well some do. I think the most obvious reason is gravity. Seriously! Don't laugh. Think about it as they are growing before they get to the end of your nail they have the nail bed to hold them up. After that they drop a little.
That's my best guess. Mine are so brittle they never get that far. Thank god for sculptured ones.

When I grew my nails past two inches they started to curl under. It was not due to any medical condition.
