The standards for the admissibility of expert witness testimony in federal court were established in Daubert v Merrill Dow Pharmaceuticals 509 U.S. 579, 113 S.Ct. 2786 (1993), and modified under subsequent case law decisions. Most states follow these standards as well. For an excellent summary see:

So called "experts," in any area, are a dime a dozen. You can find one "expert" that totally contradicts another "expert's." Mainly because it's an opinion.

there is def criteria to be considered an expert......what exactly are you talking about though?

Both sides are allowed to use an "expert"....the court deals with the legal issues....the jury will be the ones who decide which expert to believe.

Well sure, but it will depend on who the expert is and from what field of work he comes from. What did you have in mind.
