Given AND earned. The more you earn, the more respect. But everyone should be treated with some basic amount of respect.

Good question! I have met people in authority and wealthy that I had very little respect for at all because of their arrogance and pompous behavior. I have met people from the street that I had much more respect for that had a good disposition and attitude about life and other people. So yes respect should be earned and not given.

Sometimes it should just be given such as being respectful to everyone. Or respecting other people's opinion even though it differs from yours. And earned respect, in my mind, would be the respect given for someone with a great talent such as writing a great novel, being excellent in music, etc.

I believe a certain amount of respect is there from the start. Then it can be earned or lost. It all starts with respect for yourself and then for other people.
