because the women in such relationships have poor self esteem and co dependency issues. They feel that being in that relationship, no matter how horribe it is, gives them some sort of value that they wouldn't have otherwise.

I think it's because women like the bad boy types and that usually means they will be treated badly. But most women think they can change him to be a good boy. Not going to happen ladies. If all the women would only date nice boys the court system would be freed up to handle real crime cases instead of abusive case against women. Just a note, there are women out there that are bad girls and they beat up on men. It's our world today.

i think:
1) they are scared they will be alone
2) they are scared they will not find someone who will "stand" them
3) they remember the "good times", that "he used to treat me nice"
4) they think he will change, the more love she shows, the more she does what he wants
5) they fear what he will do to her if she leaves
what's funny with this, is that i feel these women (or men in similar situations) show extreme Strength in character in terms of STAYING where mentally and physically it is harmful to them. it is natural to fear the unknown, but it is really unhealthy to have NO confidence in their own ability to be alone, or find someone who will actually treat them "nicely". i have a friend in a pretty messed up relationship, and she's constantly trying to make excuses for him, and defend him. i told her once that she's actually one of the Strongest people i know, because she is so stubborn and committed to him!! and she should be PROUD of that character trait, even though currently i feel she is using it for something Negative; if only she could learn to latch on to Positive things just as strongly, and i think her fear of the future will lessen, and her confidence will grow. but that first step is extremely hard for most people...
i think it starts at home...if the family encourages u always to be Healthy, Positive, Strong, Confident and HAPPY, it will help you grow up with good morals and values in an uncertain world. u gotta know how to value Yourself first before u can find value in a Partner..... good luck to us all~~

I don't think women prefer this.
I believe that some people are simply co-dependent. Both men and women.

I think Gladys Knight said it best in the song Midnight Train To Georgia. She sings "I'd rather live in his world than live without him in mine".
