I know it is usually from other way around, but how can I become friends with my ex? We rushed into relationship way too early and we both realised that the time was not on our side with my ex's side emotional luggage from his previous relationship, and my insecurity which was caused by his unstableness. But we still both care a lot about each other.

Try understanding feelings for each other to realise where you stand in a relationship. I'm going through similar situation with my girlfriend. But our relationship is improving again as her emotions are being settled after getting rid of previous relationship. We're hoping to get along as lovers again as days go by.

Wish you luck, if you're thinking in similar direction. :)

If it was agreed between the two of you being friends will come natural because you were both adults about the situation. But put some time and space between the two of you hanging out alone because the sexual tension is still there and you'll just end up back in the same situation.

To tell the truth - quite easy. By keeping distance (as in miles) between the two. Talk to him over the phone and limit it to five minute conversations till you feel good and ready to be a real friend. Shoot him an email just to see how he's doing. BUT CUT IT RIGHT THERE.

If you see him, you become reminded of all the things, and hence you avoid him till you can deal with it in person.

i know how this feels-i am in this sort of situation right now...we dated for a while, but realized that for right now we should just remain friends...and we still care about each other...though your situation may be different from mine, it is possible for you all to remain friends since there is no bad blood between you and him...just have good communication with one another and it should be fine

I don't think it's possible to be friends after lovers. It's usually not possible to fully move on with your life if you are still friends.
