I reported it to my apartment complex on Saturday. Today they replaced the air filter and they came to see about the mold. I watched them the whole time they were here and they used white spray paint to cover up the mold that was showing on the vents. I have never had this problem before so I knows nothing about this. But is that how they were to take care of it. Should I report them. What should I do now? I also just renewed my lease. So I am pissed off right now and worried because I also have a 2 year old who I believe has been getting sick from it.

They have not handled the mold properly and should be reported. Mold is very toxic. If you could get someone to independently look at it and give you an accurate estimation of how bad the problem is that could help.

If you want to treat the mold you are finding yourself, spray with white vinegar which neutralizes it. That's not a total solution though, because there are spores all over that you can't see.

I used to work for an attorney as a legal secretary and there was a case with mold in the AC vent. The woman got so ill that she was hospitalized. Your rights, as a tenant is to not pay rent, though you do have to put it aside in a separate account to show intent of paying, until this matter is cleared up. The mold can grow through the white paint unless there is a specific type of paint that kills the mold. That I am not aware of and another responder may have more information about that. But I would be very careful until you get that information. Good luck.

Ok, calm down. Most mold is not at all dangerous unless you have allergies to it. The chances of it being the strain of mold that causes serious illness is almost nil. They should have cleaned it before spray painting it but, they may have see it was dry and just painted over it. You can do some prevention by wiping these areas down with bleach solution especially in humid weather or if you live in warm wet climate. So, just relax and watch for any signs of moisture and keep it wiped up with bleach and your baby will be fine. This is also good for around windows that sweat and have mold around them. I was an apt. manager for 10 yrs. There is no way to keep all mold out of our environment but, you can do some things on your own that will help.
